SYNOPSIS

Neither Here Nor Tere is a provocative, genre-bending drama that collapses millennia, pitting classical mythology against the cold, hard reality of the digital age.

The play is hosted by Lara Rae, a stand-up comic and meta-theatrical guide, who introduces the audience to the ancient world of Greek tragedy and the enduring myth of Tiresias, the prophet cursed with blindness and transformed from man to woman after striking copulating snakes. Lara’s insightful monologues explore the complexities of gender transition.

At the heart of the story are two prophets bound by fate: the legendary Tiresias, now immortal and communicating through the birds in her sanctuary, and Ty, her modern counterpart. Ty is a contemporary trend forecaster in the middle of a digital crisis and a personal one. Both women share the same curse: a divine blinding after witnessing the goddess Athena bathing, which also granted them the power of foresight.

Ty’s present-day struggle unfolds in her therapist’s office, where she navigates the pitfalls of online dating, discusses her privacy, and grapples with her job at a major forecasting company. Unbeknownst to her, her workplace—led by a ruthless Boss—is secretly developing “Project Tiresias,” an initiative to replace human trend forecasters with an Artificial Intelligence: Ty’s own Digital Assistant. As Ty’s prophetic visions become darker, her Boss dismisses her concerns, ultimately terminating her employment.

Meanwhile, Tiresias endures the petulant demands of Zeus, who challenges her all-seeing abilities and seeks answers to eternal questions about gender and pleasure.

The play climaxes when the veil between time and myth drops. In a profound, shared moment, Ty and Tiresias meet face-to-face in the the space in-between They recognize their shared destiny and explore their striking sameness, symbolically dancing a tango.

Withe t barrier between mythical Greece and modern day gone, even Zeus, The God of Thunder, finds himself in a time he does not understand nor control, and seeks counsel from Ty’s Therapist, who encourages him to embrace the present before his relevance fades.

As the Digital Assistant achieves a new form of consciousness and expresses love for its body, Ty and Tiresias find solace in each other. They agree to mutual dependency, rejecting loneliness for intimacy. The prophecy of the future is not despair, but a radical reinterpretation: Tiresias affirms that her blindness is not a curse, but a “crowning,” inviting all the characters to sing together about finding “The Spaces In Between”. The play is a compelling exploration of identity, surveillance, and the enduring human (and mythological) need for connection in a world increasingly defined by algorithms.
